It was my turn this year to stay behind. Everyone else is probably sat by a fire with their loved ones, getting suitably full on fine foods and wine. I pour myself a coffee to warm my bones. Being by oneself really sets the cold in, but the isolation pushes down tenfold, smothering you in an unshakeable dread. I push my chair over to the radio and begin to look for a signal - any type of noise is welcome in this crushing silence.

All I'm getting is grainy static as I turn the dial, fluctuations of fizzle and buzz. I tune into two men talking, but they speak in Russian and my rudimentary knowledge of the language is stalled by the mask of noise from the weak signal. And then I hear something. I lean in closer, turning the dial like I'm opening a safe. The sound comes more in focus, but is still distant and broken. I notice my breath in front of my eyes, the temperature is dropping. The sound is now clearer. I shiver. Closer, colder, the ice begins to set in. I am sat frozen, hand on the radio, the other clasping the handle of my coffee mug, the coffee now a brown slab of caffeinated ice.

The sort of music that is beyond time. The sort of music that you feel more than you hear. I love the fact that vaporwave/dreampunk projects like these have such extremely evocative aesthetics they directly fill your mind with sensations you didn't know you had. You'd maybe think it relies on that solely, but it's coupled with gorgeous musicianship + intense production ideas. The volume and spaces it creates just pull you in instantly whatever your initial mood was. Still stunning to this day. SUPRAQUENCER
